Stephen William Hawking, born on January 8, 1942, was a brilliant English theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author and Directory of Research at the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology within the University of Cambridge.

Hawking had a rare early-onset slow-progressing form of motor neuron disease known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig’s disease that gradually paralyzed him over the decades.  Even after the loss of his speech, he was able to communicate through a speech-generating device, initially though the use of a hand-held switch, and eventually by using a single cheek muscle.

Stephen Hawking was one of the most beloved scientists of his generation, not only for his intellect, but for his wit and humour.  He died on March 14, 2018 at the age of 76.

In the library we have A Brief History of Time: From the Big Bang to Black Holes (and the reader’s companion book), A Briefer History of Time, The Grand Design, The Universe in a Nutshell and The Illustrated On the Shoulders of Giants:  The Great Works of Physics and Astronomy by Stephen Hawking.   We also have Travelling to Infinity: My Life with Stephen, by Jane Hawking, and George’s Secret Key to the Universe, a Junior Fiction adventure novel by Stephen and his daughter Lucy.
