break down

Librarian’s Choice book review:

It’s not often that I will read an entire book in one day.  In fact, I can’t think of the last time that happened.  If you choose to read The Breakdown by B.A. Paris I suggest you clear a couple of hours because I found it impossible to put down.

The book starts at the end of a work party, when Cass decides, against her husband’s wishes, to take a country road shortcut home during a torrential storm.  She sees a woman parked on the side of the road and instead of stopping, chooses to drive by.  The next morning she learns that the woman was murdered.

Cass wrestles with guilt – what if she had stopped?  Despite police requests for information she chooses not to come forward because of her broken promise.  After that night she starts to forget things – where she parked her car, did she take her pills, the alarm code, how to use the coffee machine.  Then she starts to get phone calls…did the murderer see her that night?  Will she be next?

She is unable share with her family and friends why she thinks she’s being watched without revealing her secret. The book details Cass’s downward spiral as she (and the people around her) begins to doubt her own sanity. If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?
